Sunshine

I recently got to see this film and I was very excited to see it, as I've been waiting to see it for over a year. My original drive to see this movie was an actor I find to be brilliant, but when the previews popped up on the internet I became more interested in the film. I am not normally one to see scary movies or thrillers in theaters, or sci-fi films but I am glad I did.

I knew it was supposed to be a sorta end of the world type film, but it was better. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time worried what would happen next. It didn't move slow and it was a good story line requiring you to pay attention or you just might miss something.

The story is about a group of astronauts in outer space attempting to restart the sun as it is dying. They are the second group to attempt to start it because something happened to the first group. The astronauts are all different and their characters help improve the story line. Cillian Murphy did a brilliant job as Capa, the brilliant physicist guy behind the thing that is supposed to restart the sun. His acting was so good as well as all the other actors including Chris Evans who managed to pull off some good acting, a step up from his Fantastic Four character.

It's a good movie and I'm glad I went to see it, theres so much going on and a lot of emotion too. If you like something different this is for you. It can get suspenseful so if you can handle that, go see it.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

An interesting film about a young man with an incredible sense of smell, this movie is based on the book by the same name. I have been interested in this movie since I saw a preview for it and thought it looked like it would be a good movie to see, a little bit scary, but it looked like an interesting story line. It started out quite good, but it got a bit strange toward the end. It involved a massive orgy and some disturbing nudity.

It is a story about a young boy really whose sense of smell leads him to try and create the most perfect perfume ever. Unfortunately in order for him to do that, he kills women to take their sent. In a way it felt a little Jack the Ripperish, a man killing women several ages ago. There was not a lot of dialog in this film, it was narrated in some parts and there was some speaking, but in the end it was more of what you saw that created the story line.

I liked it for the most part, there was un-necessary nudity in the film and in my opinion lost some of the potential it had in the beginning. I have heard that this was the type of book that would not do well as a movie, but I have not read the book so I do not know if this is so.

I recommend this movie to someone isn't easily offended or disturbed by some images and has 2 1/2 hours to waste as the movie goes by slowly. If you're want to see something different than take the time to watch a film about a boy with a nose.

Driving Lessons

It's like Harold & Maude, but less disturbing and more funny and awkward. I had a few reservations about seeing this movie and getting the notion it was a modern day version of Herald and Maude, which is a movie you have probably never heard of. I was glad to discover it was not quite like the other movie other than the fact that an elderly lady and a young man becoming friends (it's a little more than friends in H&M). With some witty british humor and some strange behavior by some characters it made for a good movie.

Laura Linney did a brilliant job as the overprotective annoying whackjob of a mother whose is a bit of freak, and she made it so easy to dislike her character. I applaud Rupert Grint for his role in this movie, being given the chance to step away from his role as Ron from Harry Potter. An awkward 17 year old boy trying to master driving and working for an old retired actress, he steps away into a more adult role showing he really can act. Really in all the cast did a wonderful job.

This movie was good and just the perfect length as if it was any longer it might've been boring. There were a few small boring moments but all in all good for a laugh and something a little different.

I give it 4 Ice Cream Scoops out of 5
Rated PG-13 for language, sexual content and some thematic material.

Hairspray

I love Musicals, they might just be my favourite type of movie. Just to have people randomly break out into song...if only that could happen in real life and it not be so weird. And this was a good one, maybe not the best musical I've seen, but definitely still good.

I've been waiting for some time to see this movie and was glad when it finally made its way to theaters. I'll admit as good as it was, there was a few spots I was slightly disappointed. It could've been that I was expecting too much, or that I didn't really know the story. I was surprised at the singing ability of many of the cast, meaning that they surpassed my expectations. Except two, I found Michelle Pfeiffer to really lack in her singing ability and I think because of the movie grease I was expecting more from John Travolta. I give Travolta props though for his costume and character, it was a brilliant character to play.

If you haven't seen Hairspray, or have no idea what it's about, thats okay. It's 1962 america where big hair is better and so is hairspray, so much so it could probably be considered a character in itself. The story is about tracy, a young girl who loves to dance and desires to be on a dance show some what like american bandstand without the musical guests. There's a lot that goes on in this movie, a lot of issues a covered. Some of them being racial and others being weight related, and they show a lot.

I really enjoyed this movie, and recommend it to those people who live musicals, or if you wanna see John Travolta in drag.
